Forest Fire Concerns In The Far North

All attention is on the far north.
The Ministry of Natural Resources says a majority of the 70 active fires are in the far north.
Personnel and equipment are being shipped up to aid suppression efforts.
There are currently 11 forest fires that are over 100-hectares in size, including a 934-hectare one in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park.
The MNR says a number of fires are burning near Deer Lake, Sandy Lake and Kee-Way-Win.
Information Officer Heather Pridham says there are also a cluster of fires near Cat Lake and Wabakimi Provincial Park.
Pridham says there is the potential for smokey conditions but notes smoke isn’t an issue at this time.
Officials say there are no evacuations planned at this time.
The possibility of lightning and little rain as well as high temperatures has the MNR on high alert.
There were 8 new fires reported yesterday.
A report from a CKDR listener says the largest fire is burning in the heart of the Opasquia Park 45 miles north of Sandy Lake and about 7 miles Northwest of Big Hook’s main camp. There are 4 smaller fires in the park. Smoke conditions are bad at times and visibility for pilots is poor.
To report a fire call 310-FIRE.
