Lakehead University’s ninth Chancellor is former Thunder Bay MPP Lyn McLeod.
She says her first priority is reaching out to First Nations communities to understand their post-secondary needs.
McLeod notes she’s excited to see that LU now has an Indigenous studies credit requirement.
She says that gives First Nations students educational opportunities but also helps build cultural awareness.
McLeod is a former provincial Colleges and Universities Minister.
McLeod is going to continue to live in Southern Ontario as she also sits on the Georgian Bay College board of directors.
University President Brian Stevenson says they selected McLeod because of her political experience, understanding of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario and her ties to Simcoe County, Orillia and Barrie in southern Ontario.
