Grand Council Treaty #3 is getting $400,000 for a couple of court diversion programs.
Arthur Huminiuk is the Justice Projects Co-ordinator at Treaty Three and says the goal is not only to make aboriginal people more comfortable with the court system, but keep them out of prison.
They will work with Legal Aid and court services to keep families together and find an alternative to jail.
The alternate dispute resolution program is a two-year pilot project, while the Gladue writers are part of a one-year pilot project.
Randall Ellsworth from Legal Aid says this will be the third such Gladue program they have running in northern Ontario.
While the money is just for one year, Ellsworth is hopeful the province will continue to fund the project in the long term.
