It appears the cash-strapped Royal Canadian Legion will receive some
financial assistance from the City of Dryden.
The Legion’s request for tax relief has been turned down because it
doesn’t meet certain requirements under the Municipal Act, however Council
appears ready to provide a grant of just over $2,000.
Some on Council are concerned that a ripple effect could be felt from
other local not-for-profit organizations with the grant.
The local Branch approached Council for support in a bid to turn around
its fortunes.
President Eric Parker says strict Government regulations and high energy costs have hurt the Legion.
The Legion is required to donate 50% of its lottery funds to
local charities, leaving the facility with little money for operations.
Parker says they have already been forced to cut hours over the
Summer in order to save money.
