Greyhound Cancelling Service In Northwestern Ontario and More

Greyhound Canada is cancelling service in northwestern Ontario, the Prairies and British Columbia.

In a release they say service will be discontinued on the Trans-Canada Highway, to all parts west of Sudbury.

The region’s routes as well as service in western Canada will be discontinued as of October 31st.

The company blames a 41 percent drop in ridership across the country since 2010.

Job losses are estimated around 400 across Canada.

Local employees at Greyhound Canada can not comment on their company’s decision or what it means for local bus service.

Labour Minister Patty Hajdu was surprised to hear the shocking announcement saying it’s terrible news.

“It’s going to put Thunder Bay and all other areas that lose this service, it puts lots of people in a very difficult situation. Especially in communities and regions like ours where transportation options are limited at best.”

Hajdu stresses she will be going back to speak with her colleagues to see if there is anything they can do federally to improve transportation here in the north.
