Health Unit Set To Roll-Out Free Flu Shots

Peak flu season is right around the corner and the Northwestern Health Unit wants to ensure you are prepared.

Health officials say the peak flu season is from December through February.

No official date has been set but pharmacies and health care providers will be providing free flu shots in mid-to-late October.

Shannon Brown is the Program Specialist for Infectious Diseases and she says you can take action now to avoid influenza.

Brown recommends frequent hand washing and keeping yourself healthy by eating a good, balanced diet and drinking plenty of fluids.

She adds if you are sick, stay away from work or school to avoid the spread of the flu.

Brown says at risk groups include anyone under the age of five and over the age of 65 as well as pregnant women.

Anyone with chronic health conditions or those who look after others with high risk conditions should also get the vaccine.

The Northwestern Health Unit will also be offering the flu shot.
