Ice Still Not Safe On Wabigoon Lake

A warning to local residents that it’s still not safe to venture onto Wabigoon Lake.

Reports indicate there are still open areas coming out of the river towards government dock and from Davis Point to Devils Island.

There are other open areas on the rest of the lake.

Police stress there must be 10-centimetres of ice for fishing, cross-country skiing and walking.

Here is a guideline for suitable ice conditions:

4″ (10 cm) – suitable for ice fishing, cross-country skiing and walking (approx. 200 pounds)
5″ (12 cm) – suitable for a single snowmobile or ATV (approx. 800 pounds)
8″ – 12″ (20 – 30 cm) – suitable for one car, group of people (approx. 1500 – 2000 pounds)
12″ – 15″ (30 – 38 cm) – suitable for a light pickup truck or a van
