Improving Education For NAN Students

Improving education for students in Nishnawbe-Aski Nation communities.
The provincial and federal governments and NAN have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
The deal will focus on working together to support students in reaching their full potential.
It focuses on five main areas:
– improving student support services, including safety and well-being measures for students living away from home
– enhancing the curriculum to include and integrate First Nation culture, history, perspectives and languages
– exploring ways to improve governance and administration including appropriate involvement First Nations in provincial schools and advisory bodies as well as new organizational options for delivering second level services to First Nations schools
– enhancing human resources by increasing the participation of First Nations staff and Elders in schools while examining mechanisms for joint professional development and exchange between First nations and school systems
– boosting the participation of parents

The agreement was signed yesterday by NAN Grand Chief Harvey Yesno, Minister of Education Liz Sandals and Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Bernard Valcourt.
