Our justice system faces complex challenges in the north, problems that can’t be ignored anymore.
Speaking in Thunder Bay Monday night, Canada’s Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin stated greater scrutiny is needed when it comes to criminal cases involving Indigenous people.
McLachlin says distance, lack of resources, and not meeting cultural needs must be dealt with.
She says there are very good judges and lawyers working in the north doing their best.
McLachlin adds she’s pleased with the large number of Indigenous students picking up law studies in our region, noting more are needed.
