Kenora has become the first municipality in the region to ban smoking on public beaches.
The Northwestern Health Unit is urging local communities to take such action.
Councillor Rory McMillan says they still have to figure out enforcement and other fine details.
McMillan adds they want to ensure the City is providing a healthy environment.
The action is a step up on provincial regulations which limits smoking within 20 metres of a playground.
