There’s still no agreement to report after a weekend of bargaining between the province and correctional officers and staff.
In the Legislature, PC Critic Rick Nicholls called on the Wynne government to come clean on the cost of not reaching a deal.
He says some unexpected expenses have snuck up on the taxpayer.
Nicholls notes during one weekend this month, correctional officers didn’t sign up for voluntary overtime.
As a result, he claims managers came in to fill the void at a cost of roughly $600,000.
Labour Minister Yasir Naqvi wouldn’t answer saying he doesn’t want to interfere in the collective bargaining process.
He did respond to complaints of dangerous conditions and understaffed facilities, stressing since 2013 the government has hired 500 new correctional officers.
