Liberal MP’s seem confident that a new North American Free Trade Agreement can still get done, despite a recent U.S. deal announced with Mexico.
Kenora MP Bob Nault believes despite the three-ring circus in American politics, cooler heads will prevail.
Nault feels the political turmoil in the United States has not been helpful in their trade talks, noting its resulted in a complex situation for Canada at the negotiating table.
He says they have always maintained that they are willing to modernize NAFTA, but they won’t accept any deal that hurts Canada.
Nault adds our country has to remain patient, noting the two sides still have an agreement.
He says the deal has worked very effectively for Canada, stating they are still trading more than $2-billion a day between the two countries.
Labour Minister and Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu is confident a trade agreement can be reached.
Hajdu doesn’t believe NAFTA is dead, stressing it has the support of employers on both sides of the border.
She says they need a fair deal for Canada.
