If the Northwestern Health Unit has its way, you will no long be able to smoke at local beaches.
Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kit Young Hoon is approaching local muncipaltiies to pass by-laws banning smoking on public beaches.
She says under the new Smoke-Free Ontario Act, the only smoking restrictions on beaches are if they come within 20 meters of a play-ground.
Young Hoon says the move would help keep smokes away from children and reduce the amount of litter, thus making beaches more attractive to tourists.
She believes the public is ready for such wide reaching legislation.
