Provincial Police are warning local residents to be careful if you are venturing out on the ice. Most lakes are starting to open up and extreme caution is urged. The reminder comes after a man went through the ice on Lake of the Woods in Kenora early Sunday morning. Police and emergency personnel managed to pull him to safety. OPP say travellers should stay away from open water and check the ice thickness and quality. They also suggest wearing a buoyant snowmobile suit and carry ice picks. OPP say not only does melting ice become unsafe, but banks along all bodies of water soften and can pose a threat. Police stress ice conditions will vary from day to day, hour to hour and from place to place.
