Some local concerns with a provincial proposal to overhaul the health care system.
The government sponsored ‘Patients First’ Discussion Paper calls for several changes, including giving Local Health Integration Networks control over funding and accountability agreements.
Dr. Kit Young Hoon is the Medical Officer of Health for the Northwestern Health Unit and says the report provides some risks to public health.
Young Hoon says she’s concerned with an idea to combine funding for health care services and public health.
She is worried that funding will only flow to the needs of health care delivery, treatment and urgent care.
Young Hoon notes their mandate is disease prevention, health promotion and easing the burden on health care providers.
She adds the Health Unit does want to work more closely with local agencies, including the North West LHIN.
The government is now seeking input on the plan and Young Hoon says it comes with some benefits but numerous risks to promotion and education.
