A chance to learn skills in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding and other trades is coming to First Nations communities in the north through a mobile skills centre.
Training Coordinator Gordon Kakagemic notes the $2.2-million unit will be visiting urban centres as well as Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities.
Kakagemic says they want to change the industry trend of training Indigenous youth and others to be helpers, but instead train them to become an apprentice.
He adds apprentices will be able to work at home, but also be encouraged to go wherever the work leads them.
