The Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act has received Royal Assent from the Senate.
Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford says the legislation has critical elements around safety and responsible gun ownership and keeps guns out of the hands of those convicted of domestic violence.
The Kenora MP says he’s heard nothing but positive response from his constituents for the legislation and notes it helps protect law abiding gun owners.
The act amends the criminal code and the firearms act, strengthening some provisions like making a firearms safety course mandatory for first time licence applicants.
Rickford says it strikes a perfect balance.
MP’s are back in their ridings following the final sitting of Parliament before the next federal election.
