Area municipalities are being urged to support a resolution calling for a public inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women.
Vanessa Lucky from the Ontario Native Women’s Association says such a probe would actually have a number of benefits for local communities.
Lucky notes a reduction in violence against women has financial benefits in lowering policing costs and medical costs as well as reducing the need of social services.
She stresses a drop in violence also leads to happier and healthier school children.
Lucky says a number of regional groups are already supporting the call for a national inquiry.
