The passing of Gord Downie has deeply affected the Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation.
In a statement, Alvin Fiddler says words can’t express the sorrow of the NAN Executive Council to the death of the iconic Canadian singer from the Tragically Hip.
Fiddler credits Downie with exposing dark truths about this country like no one before him, especially with bringing the history of the residential school system and the death of Chanie Wenjack to a national audience.
He says Downie restored the dignity and innocence of a little boy who left his residential school and only wanted to go home.
Downie lost his battle with cancer Tuesday night at the age of 53.
