A week to celebrate the importance of trees in Canada
This past week was recognized at National Forest Week.
Nature Conservancy of Canada Spokesperson Andrew Holland says our forests are facing concerns in some parts of the country.
Holland says forests have been reduced to less than 7% of the landscape in southern Ontario.
He notes invasive forest insects and disease are starting to take their toll.
Holland says while trees are important to the economy, they also play an important role in dealing with climate change.
He says more than 200,000 Canadians rely on jobs in the forest sector.
Holland adds private land owners can be a part of the solution in meeting our climate change goals by preserving their land or donating it for conservation efforts.
