NDP MPP Asking Government To Crack Down On Distracted Driving

Forget about fines for distracted walking, the government needs to get tougher on distracted driving.

That’s the feeling of NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo, who has introduced a private members bill to crack down on people who text and drive.

However, Transportation Minister Steve Del Duca says they’ve already introduced legislation with tougher penalties.

Del Duca notes fines could reach as high as $50,000 upon conviction as well as a possible two years in jail.

DiNovo says even the latest amendments introduced by the Liberals are no more than a slap on the wrist.

In her bill, a guilty driver could lose his or her licence for a prolonged period and be asked to participate in community services before he or she is allowed back behind the wheel.

She notes distracted drivers who injure or kill someone, need to be made accountable for their actions.
