The federal NDP is discussing plans for a national suicide prevention strategy.
Leader Jagmeet Singh is currently touring northwestern Ontario, with stops in Kenora and Thunder Bay.
Singh touched on the issue during a meeting with Nishnawbe Aski Nation officials, noting an NDP government would work closely with Indigenous communities.
He says there needs to be a nation-to-nation relationship to understand what local needs are.
Singh says his plan will be grassroots driven and not based on decisions out of Ottawa.
The NDP plan to bring legislation forward in November proposing a suicide prevention strategy.
Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says four young people took their own lives in Indigenous communities in the past week, arguing it’s important to have funding available to deal with the issue.
Angus adds an NDP government will work with groups like NAN to make sure any program is culturally appropriate for First Nation communities.
