The provincial government is refusing to pick up the tab on a new hydro transmission line to the Lac La Croix First Nation in northwestern Ontario.
The band had put a proposal in for a new hydro project.
But Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli says it’s the First Nation’s responsibility for getting the hydro to the grid.
Chiarelli says the contract is very specific and having the province step in would set a dangerous precedent.
The province has put the cost of a new transmission line at $16-million, but the NDP is questioning those figures.
Energy Critic Mike Mantha says the band can’t get the hydro to the main grid, without constructing a new transmission line.
Mantha says the project would generate clean power and economic opportunities.
