The President of the Cloverbelt Local Food Co-Op is pleased with a new bill that will support local farmers.
Jen Springett says it shows that Ontario recognizes the growing local food movement.
She says there’s emphasis on food distributing networks, such as co-ops, so the timing is perfect for them with the recent roll out of the Local Food Co-Op in Dryden.
The Local Food Act 2013 will also create a non-refundable tax credit of 25% for farmers who donate their produce to food banks and proclaim a Local Food Week that usually takes place beginning the first Monday in June.
Springett says there are already a number of local farmers who donate their product to food banks and seniors out of the goodness of their heart.
She adds this bill is really what small farming businesses need, and it will also help support marketing and distribution networks, such as the local co-op.
