New Fines And Demerit Points In Place For Distracted Driving

The local spokesperson for Young Drivers of Canada is pleased the province has once again addressed distracted driving.

New and larger fines are now in place with the passage of the Making Ontario Roads Safer Act.

Maria Bagdonis believes the crackdown will discourage drivers from using hand-held devices while behind the wheel.

Under the new legislation, fines for distracted driving will range anywhere from $300-$1,000 and cost three demerit points on your drivers licence.

That’s up significantly from $60-$500.

Bagdonis notes it’s a misconception that teenaged drivers are most likely to text and drive.

She says it’s the ones who have been driving for years and feel they have the experience to answer a call and direct their vehicle safely.
