New Strict Rules For Distracted Driving

The provincial government is coming after you if you think you can still get away with using your cell phone when driving.

Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca says legislation is being introduced this Fall that will increase fines and penalties for distracted driving.

Del Duca says his proposed changes will hike fines up to a range of $500-$1,000, with an upper limit of $3,000 and six demerit points for repeat offenders.

Convicted drivers could also lose their license for up to 30 days, a first in Canada.

Del Duca notes recent Provincial Police statistics show distracted drivers cause more crashes then speeding or impaired drivers.

He says they’re also working to create a new charge of careless driving causing death or bodily harm that includes a $10,000 fine and jail time.
