Northern Ontario Students Take Part In Lobby Week

Hundreds of post-secondary students from across Northern Ontario are at Parliament Hill.
Corey Grist is the Northern Commissioner for the Canadian Federation of Students, and says they are meeting with ministers and MP’s during “National Lobby Week”.
The group is making seven recommendations to the federal government, all of which surround making things easier for students to access and afford post-secondary education.
Grist says they relate to establishing a Post-Secondary Education Act, tackling the national student debt level and making tuition more affordable.
Grist points out that tuition in Ontario is the highest in the country, and it’s felt especially in Northwestern Ontario where many people can’t afford to go to school.
Another recommendation relating specifically to the region is a call for more funding for Aboriginal, First Nation and Metis students.
Grist says many students are also having problems finding a job after graudation, and there aren’t many opportunities in the North.
Grist notes they have roughly 150-meetings within the next four-days and they hope the government will listen.
