The Northern Policy Institute is offering some suggestions to deal with skyrocketing food prices in northern Ontario.
The NPI finds increased travel costs, a lack of market competition and a lack of infrastructure as factors.
Author Eric Melillo says developing the northern economy can help.
“Comes with the conclusion that roads [need to be] built. And that those roads can help decrease the cost of some of those foods.”
Melillo suggests new technology currently being developed could also reduce shipping costs.
“Roads themselves come with a pretty hefty price tag so the development of airships and drone technology have the potential to help bring some of the costs of food down.”
