NWHU concerned with rise in Invasive Pneumococcal Disease

The Northwestern Health Unit says it has seen an increase in Invasive Pneumococcal Disease in the past three years.

In fact, the incidence of the disease in this region is more than four times higher than the provincial average.

The Health Unit says it can cause infections in different parts of the body, including sinuses, ears, lungs, bloodstream, and brain.

IPD is most common in kids under the age of 2 or people over the age of 65.

The NWHU says the best protection is getting a childhood vaccination, or if you are older, a vaccination against IPD.
