Deborah MacLean

February 6, 1958 – December 30, 2025

Deborah Ann MacLean, a beloved (grand)mother, wife, sister and friend, passed away peacefully at the Dryden Hospital December 30, 2025. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia to Isabel and Jack MacLean, Debbie moved with her family to Northwestern Ontario at a young age. Growing up in Oxdrift, she loved playing baseball, riding her bike, and stopping to smell the roses.

After graduating with a degree in Journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University), she eventually returned to Dryden. Initially working as a reporter for the Dryden Observer, Debbie ultimately used her education in her role as Information Officer for the Ministry of Natural Resources. She dedicated 30 years of her life to emergency response, keeping the public informed through even the most hectic of fire seasons. Her consistent radio updates made her voice familiar to many across the region, and she was often recognized because of it. She took great pride in her work as a public servant and championed transparency, integrity and communication until her retirement in 2018.

Debbie had many skills and hobbies. A perpetual dreamer, she could often be found photographing wildflowers, devouring a good book or learning something new. Above all else, she nurtured her love of family. Together with her husband, Jacques, Debbie revelled in the experiences of marriage, parenthood, and especially grandparenting. Her unwavering whimsy made her a champion of possibility and gratitude, and anyone lucky enough to be connected to her benefited from her fierce support and generosity. Her unique blend of softness and strength will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her husband Jacques Dufresne, daughter Paige Dufresne (Tom), granddaughter Éowyn Woodworth, sister Wendy Peck, nieces Shawnda Peck (Shane), Danille Peck (Tracy), Brett Thiel and nephew Brian Peck (Helena). She was predeceased by her father Jack MacLean, mother Isabel MacLean (née Pledge), niece Jordan Thiel (Derek) and sister Heather MacLean.

A special thank you to the doctors and nurses at DRHC for their compassionate care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
