Contract talks have broken down between Ontario’s 3,000 registered nurses and personal support workers employed at 174 for-profit nursing homes across the province.
The Ontario Nurses’ Association says they were met with a number of demands for concessions following 2-weeks of negotiations and mediation.
The ONA stresses the demands would have negatively impacted the quality of resident care.
The union says some of the proposals included the stripping of basic benefits for ONA members.
It also points to a proposal to change nurse-patient ratios and nursing hours.
The ONA says it’s hopeful that a deal can be reached but note that they are prepared to go to arbitration this fall.
