Ontario Government Under Fire From Local MPP

Kenora Rainy River MPP Howard Hampton is accusing the Harris Tories of trying to deceive the public about their commitment to water safety.
The NDP Leader says the province is asking Health Units to return half the water safety grants they were given following the E-Coli disaster in Walkerton.
The Province offered Health Units one-time funding for water safety in 2000, but Dr. Pete Sarsfield Medical Officer of Health for the Northwestern Health Unit says there was no mention of the grants being a 50-50 funding deal.
Sarsield says the government’s request to return half of their water grants is “unreasonable and strange.”
The Health Ministry now calls it a burocratic foul-up.
