The Doug Ford government is sounding a lot less supportive today of the newly signed United States, Mexico, Canada trade agreement, than they were yesterday.
Jim Wilson is the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade and he feels the deal leaves many sectors of Ontario’s economy vulnerable.
Wilson says as it stands now, the U.S. can still unilaterally impose tariffs on any product it wants, with no repercussions.
He says the new agreement is shocking, unacceptable and practically useless.
Wilson is also disappointed that the federal government has not outlined any compensation for the dairy, poultry and egg industry which he says will be negatively impacted by the deal.
He adds the agreement doesn’t address the tariffs on steel and aluminum and leaves other sectors of the economy vulnerable to the whims of the American government.
