“Potential Impacts to Winnipeg from Energy East Pipeline.”
That’s the name of a report by the Manitoba Energy Justice Coalition calling out safety concerns in the Energy East Pipeline project.
Author Dennis Leveneu says the line needs to be moved as it’s too close to aqueducts.
He says the pipeline crosses within two meters of the City of Winnipeg aqueduct putting drinking water at risk for 850,000 people.
Leveneu notes smaller leaks would allow chemicals like benzene to enter the water system.
He’s also concerned the line runs parallel to other natural gas lines.
Leneveu says Manitoba has seen four natural gas pipeline explosions in the past 20 years.
He notes the line can easily be rerouted.
