The Wynne government has confirmed $85-million in funding to clean-up mercury from the English-Wabigoon River system.
Legislation has been passed at Queen’s Park.
Environment Minister Chris Ballard says the government is committed to working with the Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong First Nations on a remediation action plan.
The funding will cover costs associated with preventing or reducing the discharge of contaminants into the river, reducing the presence of mercury, and carry out monitoring once the clean-up is complete.
Grassy Narrows Chief Simon Fobister says the Premier has guaranteed that the clean-up will be completed quickly.
