Provincial Day Of Action Hits Thunder Bay

There’s a push on for equal pay for equal work at colleges and universities across Ontario.

Lakehead University’s Laurie Forbes took part in a province wide day of action today to point out that faculty under contract, do not have the same benefits as their unionized counterparts.

“All about creating a society where there is fairness. The laws are about treating people fairly and for us at the university it’s incredibly important because we have a number of people who are employed here as faculty members who are precariously employed.”

She notes there are at least seventy people who have positions where they don’t know from one semester to the next, how many courses they are going to teach, how much money they are going to make, as well, they are working without benefits and without any professional development money.

The Department of Sociology Professor adds they want to bring the issue up with management at the university.
