The Provincial Government is being urged to do more to help aboriginal students succeed in the classroom.
A recent study of 5,000 native students from fly-in communities in Northwestern Ontario shows that 85% qualify for special education assistance and 93% lag at least two grades behind in school.
Janet Wilkenson is the Director of Education with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board and says they know there is a problem and they are working to improve the situation.
Wilkenson says the School Board recently implemented oral language programs for aboriginal students and they are looking at other programs that might help them succeed.
She adds the Province has studied the issue long enough and now its time to take action.
