The Economic Development Officer for Red Lake says the Red Lake-Ear Falls area is starving for power.
Bill Greenway says they are near capacity and notes future mines won’t be able to come on-line unless the province immediately addresses the situation.
Greenway says there’s currently a need for 300-megawatts of power for mining activity in the Red Lake area alone.
He adds the government is talking about connecting northern First Nations to the grid, something that would be impossible under the current situation.
Greenway notes having a healthy supply of power will end up creating 3,300 jobs in the mining sector as well as 7,700 indirect jobs.
A recent study shows the potential of $95-million in taxation revenue for the government with the development of new mines in northwestern Ontario.
