Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford has signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz.
The memorandum covers 11-areas of bilateral energy co-operation.
Rickford calls it a historic agreement.
The Kenora MP says it covers greater energy security, environmental responsibility and sustainability.
Rickford says the deal is a $140-billion a year trade agreement.
Under the agreement, both countries will support the advancement of an efficient and clean electric grid and they will share knowledge, technical information and research plans.
Both sides will look at enhancing coordination on energy efficiency standards as well as facilitating increased use of natural gas in the transportation sector.
