Environment Canada is out with some safety tips as it wraps up Lightning Safety Week.
The agency says last year there were a dozen lightning strike victims in Canada, many of which could have been avoided if people knew when and how to take proper action.
You should take shelter immediately if you are in a danger area, preferably in a house or all metal vehicle.
Do not seek shelter under a tree because lightning tends to strike tall objects.
Research shows two thirds of damaging lightning strikes happen when the storm is not directly above the victim, so Environment Canada urges people to pay attention to all weather forecasts.
The lightning safety rule is: “if thunder roars, go indoors.”
A Canadian Lightning Danger Map can be found on the Environment Canada website.
