Serious Housing Shortage Concerns In Sioux Lookout

Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance is shedding some light on the seriousness of the housing crisis facing the community.

Lawrance says right now there are 170 job postings in Sioux Lookout, with only 13-available homes.

He adds that rentals are at 99% occupancy.

Lawrance says simply put, they need housing in Sioux Lookout.

Lawrance also says they need a new emergency shelter, detox centre, long-term care, assisted living for seniors, medical and student housing as well as a youth safe house.

He made the comments at the first Northern Housing Summit, which wraps up Thursday afternoon.

Lawrance says the gathering has really helped get housing needs and shortages under the microscope.

He notes a lot of brainstorming has gone on and he believes they have identified some opportunities.
