Sioux Lookout Mayor Calls All-Weather Road “Big Step Forward”

The Mayor of Sioux Lookout says a commitment to build an All-Season Road to the Ring of Fire is an important step in developing the Far North.

Doug Lawrance says they have been urging the government to connect with the Far North for years now.

Lawrance notes the project will benefit First Nations and the community of Sioux Lookout.

He says his community has been preparing for this day with $50-million in spending to upgrade the Airport, main road arteries and sewer and water infrastructure.

Lawrance also points to the development of a Regional Distribution Centre at the Sioux Lookout Airport as well as training opportunities that will be made available.

He adds the announcement that the road will be connected to the Pickle Lake highway system provides a major boost in their bid to secure a Trans-load facility in the east end of town.

Lawrance says the project is a joint effort with Morgan Fuels, CN Rail and First Mining and stresses talks are on-going.
