Indigenous youth from high schools in Dryden, Sioux Lookout and Kenora had a chance Wednesday to meet and network with those in the skilled trades and technology field.
Skills Ontario spokesperson Michelle Crow says the goal of Mentoring Day was to showcase the career opportunities available.
Students received testimonials from a driller at New Gold, two Domtar Mill employees and an Union Gas heavy equipment operator and gas fitter.
A number of hands-on activities were also held to create excitement for the industry.
Crow stresses northwestern Ontario is currently in a skilled trades deficit, so it’s important to attract students from all cultures.
She adds they use an innovative and interactive approach to help attract more people to skilled trades and technology.
The event was held at the Centre in Dryden.
