State Of Emergency In Wabaseemoong

A state of emergency has been issued in Whitedog First Nation.

Band officials have started to make some evacuations as heavy smoke from Kenora Fire 71 continues to blanket the community.

High vulnerable individuals including children, elders and those with respiratory illness are now in Rat Portage.

The fire, about 20-kilometres north of Whitedog, has grown to 6,800 hectares and An Emergency Area Order has been issued.

All travel and use of the Werner Lake Road from the Manitoba boundary eastward is banned until further notice and use of crown land is also prohibited.

20 fire ranger crews continue to install sprinkler systems and lay hose lines around the perimeter of the fire and helicopters and waterbombers continue to attack the blaze.

So far no buildings have been lost and a basecamp has been established in Minaki.
