It will be an emotional evening at the Dryden Memorial Arena Saturday night. (October 25th)
The Dryden GM Ice Dogs are preparing for their annual Pink the Rink game.
All proceeds will go towards the Oncology Unit at the Dryden Regional Health Centre.
Goaltender Jacob Anthony says they are excited to hit the ice for an important cause.
“Last year the rink was phenomenal. All of the fans were going and it brought a lot of energy to the team and I’m really, really excited to get it going this year. It has a little personal meaning this year so I hope we can pull out a win. I know it means a lot to everybody and it should be a good game.
Anthony says the players had an opportunity to visit the hospital this past week to meet with cancer patients.
“It was nice to get a perspective on things of what you’re playing for. Being in there, it was tough, because just seeing how much they are fighting and how much their life has changed. It’s awful to see what they going through and it’s nice to be able to do something, even if it’s small, to donate to them (cancer patients).”
Anthony will unveil his new special mask at the game.
“I had all the kids in grade 1 to 3, across Dryden. I put in a contest, design a mask for me and I wanted to pick one that meant something to me and picked the best one.”
Anthony says a young man named Brantley from New Prospect School is the winner.
The game will feature fundraising opportunities as well as special acknowledgments.
Game time between Dryden GM and Red Lake is 7:30pm.
The Dryden GM Ice Dogs and Red Lake Miners are getting ready to ‘Pink the Rink’.
The annual fundraising games for the local hospitals will be held tomorrow (Friday) in Cochenour and Saturday at the Memorial Arena.
Ice Dogs representative Natasha Lovenick Markham was a guest on the CKDR Morning Show to talk about the importance of both events.
“Real celebration of the health care that we are able to provide for those who are going through cancer treatment and have survived and thrived through it.”
She adds “Everyone has probably been touched at one point or another with cancer and as an organization the Dryden GM Ice Dogs are also familiar with members of our team that have been through the cancer treatment process, are currently going through the cancer treatment process.”
Lovenick Markham says “We really want to make sure that we do our part to support our local health care centre so that these individuals can stay home, have the treatment that they need, and become health and fight this awful, awful disease.”
