Township Of Ignace Will Decide On Nuclear Repository

Willingness to host a proposed underground nuclear repository in the area will be decided by the Township of Ignace.

That firm stance has been established from a vote by Council that it will be the one to inform the Nuclear Waste Management Organization whether or not the community is a willing host.

That decision is expected to be made in 2023 as the NWMO plans to select a site that same year.

Willingness will be determined by a Council resolution, with public input.

Mary Penny Lucas says they have been learning about the project since 2010 and have spent more than a year speaking with local residents and understanding how they feel willingness should be assessed.

“The community of Ignace has spoken about how and who will decide if Ignace is a willing host of the project. This was decided through a fair, transparent, balanced, confidential, and inclusive process. I’m pleased that the residents of Ignace decided on an extended decision process as this will ensure they are fully informed.”

South Bruce is the other remaining location in the NWMO’s site selection process.
