All employees with the Treaty Three Police Service will take part in a union vote Thursday, as directed by the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
The service has challenged the federal jurisdiction, arguing that officers should fall under provincial jurisdiction.
Sandra Goodick is a spokesperson with the Public Service Alliance of Canada, and says the decision will show that the local continues to support being in a union, and that it will protect the rights that have been bargained.
Goodick adds that the courts have started to move First Nations into provincial jurisdiction and that policing should fall into that as well.
However when looking at possible changes, Goodick says there are some provincial benefits around health and safety, but believes workers won’t see a significant difference.
Voting will be held at the Couchiching Detachment between 3-4pm and 6-8pm, and at the General Headquarters in Kenora between 3-4pm and 6-8pm.
The results are expected sometime next week.
