It wasn’t the majority he was after, but Conservative Prime
Minister Harper says he’ll take the stronger minority mandate he’s
been given by Canadians and move this country forward.
This time around, the House of Commons will be peppered with 19
more Tories on the government benches.
The Conservatives won 143 seats in all, mostly on the backs of
the Liberals in Ontario.
In fact, the Liberals sank to their lowest level of popular
support since the election of 1867 and took just 76 seats — more
than two-dozen less than at dissolution.
The Bloc stayed about even in Quebec at 50 seats, the N-D-P
gained eight to 37, and there are two independents.
Voter turnout was the lowest in federal election history, at just
59 per cent.
