The only Veterans Affairs Office in northwestern Ontario is scheduled to close its doors for good Friday in Thunder Bay.
A list ditch effort to save Canada’s 8 offices appears to have fallen on death ears after Minister Julian Fantino showed up late for a meeting with veterans in Ottawa this week.
Calls continue to come in from veterans for the resignation of Fantino.
They’re upset Fantino didn’t hold a serious discussion on the issue.
Fantino says he’s sorry for the way he treated the veterans.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP John Rafferty expressed his outrage.
Rafferty says the duty of the government is to be there for veterans in their moment of need, not abandon them to budget and service cuts.
The NDP member is calling for the reversal of the decision.
Rafferty says veterans served Canada with courage and distinction and now the government is turning their back on them.
He adds there have been eight military suicides in just two months and the Conservatives have failed to listen to those who have fought for our freedom.
