It is with great sadness for the family to announce that Walter Fredrick John Philipp lost his courageous battle with cancer on January 31, 2007. Walter was born in Wieslach, Germany to Fredrick and Frieda Philipp, where he was raised and educated. He moved to Dryden in October of 1956 at the age of 19, and worked various different jobs. After several years with no real job prospect, he moved to Thompson, Manitoba, and worked in the mine. After 14 months in Thompson, he decided to go back to Germany, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Rita on April 20, 1963. Together they decided to give Dryden another chance and moved back in 1964. Walter obtained a job in the forest sector as a machine operator, and was in that business for 38 years. His last couple of months before retirement was with Ricci Trucking Inc., and was very grateful for the lovely retirement party and all the gifts he received from them after only a short time of employment. He could not say enough good things about them. Walter was active with soccer for 20 years until a broken leg forced him to quit in 1985. His teammates and friends put together a fundraiser, and was overwhelmed by all the support he received. Walter was also very involved with bowling for over 30 years. He could often be found at Husky Restaurant having coffee, and was just beginning his interests in camping and fish fry’s. Walter remained very close with all his friends throughout his life. Walter was predeceased by his father in 1965, his mother in 1976, and in infant sister Inga in 1940. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Rita, daughter Sonya (Dave) Denzler, son Thomas, sister Margot, and neice Marhlene. Visitation for the late Walter Philipp will be held Monday, February 5, 2007 from 6:00-8:00p.m at the Dryden Community Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at 2:00p.m. at the Dryden Community Funereal Home with Rev. Mary Mennell officiating. Interment in the Dryden Cemetery to follow. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Dryden Regional Health Centre Oncology Unit through the Dryden Community Funeral Home, 249 Grand Trunk Ave., Dryden, ON P8N 2X3.
